Food banks to be set up in religious places

23 October, 2022

Steps have been taken to set up food banks and food exchange centres in religious places to ensure food security and improve the nutritional status of the people.

This was made known at the progress review meeting of the Food Safety and Nutrition Assurance program which was held virtually on Friday, October 21 under the chairmanship of Presidential Adviser on Food Security, Dr. Suren Batagoda. The program will be launched in 14,000 Grama Seva divisions at the District Secretariat and Divisional Secretariat level under the supervision of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs.

The food exchange centres in these areas will collect the excess food from local households and send them to the Food Banks to be given to families facing a food shortage.
