
A ceremony was held recently at Hellebodde Estate in Pusselawa to launch the construction of 100 houses under the Indian Housing Project.
The foundation stones were laid by High Commissioner of India, Taranjit Singh Sandhu along with Minister for Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development, Palani Digambaram and State Minister for Education, V.S. Radhakrishnan. Members of Parliament and Central Provincial Council, senior Government officials as well as officials from Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT), Plantation and Estate Management and over 500 people from the Hellebodde Estate were also present.
High Commissioner Sandhu recalled the promise of an additional 10,000 houses announced by Prime Minister of India, Narandra Modi during his visit to the hill country last month and reiterated Government of India’s continued commitment to the well-being and development of plantation areas.
Both Ministers thanked the Government of India for the support and the various development projects implemented by it in the plantation areas, especially the housing project.
The Government of India has committed to build 14,000 houses in the plantation areas. Habitat for Humanity, Sri Lanka is the implementing agency for the houses being constructed at Hellebodde Estate.
