Call to allow pregnant public servants to work from home

9 July, 2022

Women Parliamentarian’s Caucus Chairperson MP, Dr.Sudarshini Fernandopulle in a letter to the Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Dinesh Gunawardena on Thursday has asked to consider female public servants who are pregnant in offering them with an opportunity to work in a place of work very close to their residences.

Due to the present fuel crisis in the country, no transport facilities are adequately available for them to travel far to their places of work. Therefore, almost all of them are greatly inconvenienced by now.

Under these circumstances, Dr. Fernandopulle, MP has earnestly requested Minister Gunawardena to pay special attention to this plight of pregnant public servants on a temporary basis until the fuel crisis situation becomes normal within the country.

The Ministry of Public Administration has already issued a circular on the summoning of public servants to work by reducing the number of workers to be called for work daily due to the fuel crisis. That particular circular dated 17.06.2022 of Circular No. 16/2022 has been issued by the Ministry of Public Administration in that regard.

If their places of work cannot be changed due to the essential official requirements, Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus of the Sri Lankan Parliament appeals to Minister Gunawardena to explore the possibility for these pregnant public servants to work online by staying at their present residences for the time being.
