Vaccinate dogs soon against rabies

5 June, 2022

Steps should be taken to prevent the transmission of rabies from dogs to humans as there is a shortage of anti-rabies vaccines for dogs, said a spokesman for the Public Health Veterinary Services Division of the Health Ministry.

Public Health Veterinary Services Director Dr. A.D. Kithsiri has called upon the public to get their dogs vaccinated against rabies soon.

He said that between 25-30 people die of rabies annually and this has been confirmed in 58 percent of heads examined.

“The dog is the main transmitter of rabies in Sri Lanka. Thirteen people had died of rabies during the past five months in the country,” he said.
