Leader of the Patriotic United National Party (PUNP) Sugath Hewapathirana said that people should unite to defeat the attempt by the JVP to instigate people to go for a third insurrection by going against the Constitution. Hewapathirana was responding to a comment by JVP and NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the JVP rally at Nugegoda on Wednesday that power can be grabbed in an unconstitutional manner.
Dissanayake said, “Normally Governments are changed at an election. According to the Constitution, there are another two and a half years to go for a Presidential election and three more years for the General election. However, that is the Constitutional position.
“However, it has been proved throughout the world that politics could go beyond the limits of the Constitution and other rules and regulations. That is the most important thing. The political theories, Constitution and other legislation are good for studies at libraries but the ground reality of politics is different,” Dissanayake said.
Hewapathirana said when JVP Leader Dissanayake says the power should be grabbed bypassing the Constitution and other rules and regulations, it gives the impression that he is asking the people to get ready for the third insurrection. Dissanayake said that he would tell how to grab power later. Hewapathirana said, “What Dissanayake would tell later means that he instigates people to go for another armed struggle to grab power which failed twice when the JVP was led by Rohana Wijeweera. They are well aware that they can never come to power with the public mandate. Anura Dissanayake has become the ‘dream President’ on Facebook and the Internet. They know even though Dissanayake could become the ‘dream President’, he can never become the true President of this country.”
Hewapathirana said the JVP which knows this bitter truth today, appears as the Jathika Jana Balawegaya (National People’s Power) and is attempting to instigate people to go for an insurrection. “We request the people to get together to defeat this attempt by the JVP to turn the country into a bloody battlefield again to grab power.”
