Move to ease congestion at hospitals:

Covid-19 patients permitted to self-quarantine at home

14 May, 2021

The Health authorities have decided to allow asymptomatic Covid-19 patients to self-quarantine at home from tomorrow to ease overcrowding in hospitals.

Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control State Minister Dr. Sudharshani Fernandopulle said they were considering this option to minimise hospital congestion due to the increasing numbers of coronavirus positive cases after the April festive season.

Currently, the country records over 2,200 cases per day and Epidemiology Chief Dr. Sudath Samaraweera has warned that this number could further increase in the coming days. “We will manage asymptomatic patients at home and make arrangements to take them to hospital if they develop complications,” she said.

There will be a system to monitor all these patients staying at home and transfer them to hospital immediately if the patients feel unwell, she told the media yesterday. The country has recorded nearly 140,000 Covid-19 positive cases and 923 deaths by early yesterday.
