
In line with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ national policy framework and the concept of “Insurance for All”, the second phase of ‘Viru Abhiman’ a Covid 19 insurance cover was launched by the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLI) last week.
The policy proposal was presented to President Rajapaksa by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Chairman Jagath Wellawatta. The President in turn presented it to Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Minister of Public Services, Provincial Council and Local Government, Janaka Bandara Tennekoon, the Minister of Industries, Secretary of the Defence Ministry, Deputy Chairman and Secretary of the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka.
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, spreading globally and locally at an alarming rate, doctors, healthcare workers, the Tri Forces, Police, Public Health Inspectors, Samurdhi Officers, related State staff members and private sector staff members are working tirelessly to control the pandemic and sustain the country’s economic front.
The Government plans to offer the group life insurance free to all public servants.
The insurance cover has been extended to the private sector too at a subsidised rate. The employers of the private sector are encouraged to obtain this cover for their employees.
The President presented a proposal to Deputy Chairman of the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka, Mahesh Hirdramani as a symbolic gesture.
Through the insurance cover policyholders will receive financial benefits up to Rs.100,000 for death due to Covid-19, Rs.1000 per day for hospitalisation and Rs.2000 per day for ICU cover (up to a maximum of 90 days).
