Trishaw passengers swept away

Three males and one female were swept away when travelling in a trishaw across the Deduru Oya in the Wellawa area. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. yesterday. While two people were later saved, two others including the female as well as the trishaw remain missing. Wellawa Police along with villagers are conducting a search to locate the missing people.

Cattle thief nabbed

Officers of the Weeraketiya Police on Friday nabbed one person suspected to have been part of a group stealing cattle in the area. According to the Police the individual along with several others had been attempting to flee in a luxury vehicle when ordered to stop by Police at a roadblock set up. The group had fired at the Police who had returned fire. Several suspects had fled in the ensuing confusion. Police however arrested one individual, and recovered a locally manufactured firearm. Weeraketiya Police are carrying out further investigations into the incident.

Fraudster arrested

Police have arrested a suspect involved in defrauding a number of individuals by providing false cheques on Friday. The suspect, a resident of Hospital Road, Kottawa had been posing as a computer sales businessman when he had committed the frauds against agents and customers. According to the Police, Homagama Special Crimes Investigation Unit, Colombo Special Crimes Investigations Unit, Horana Police, Welikada, Maharagama, Alawwa and a number of other Police stations too had received complaints against the person.

Illicit affair causes death

A 27-year-old was killed in a dispute over an illicit affair in Peradeniya on Friday. The man was stabbed to death with a sharp tool during the dispute. The victim was declared dead on being admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital. Police have nabbed one suspect in connection with the incident. Peradeniya Police are carrying out further investigations.
