EC discusses modalities to hold election

The Election Commission (EC)has held three rounds of talks with the Health sector representatives to discuss a strategy to hold the delayed Parliamentary election in keeping with Covid 19 guidelines, an Election Commission spokesperson told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

The meetings were held at the Election Secretariat and the office of the Presidential Task Force at the National Operation Centre for Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak.

The Attorney General has requested the Supreme Court to dismiss the Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the date of the General Election, without taking them up for hearing.

Additional Solicitor General Indika Demuni de Silva, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, made this request before the court when the petitions were taken up on Friday for the fifth day.

Romesh de Silva PC representing President’s Secretary P.B.Jayasundera also informed court on Friday that Health Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe has conveyed that the election process can be set in motion under the present conditions in the country.

He was continuing his submissions before a five member bench Chaired by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya when seven petitions against holding the election on June 20 and the proclamation by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa dissolving parliament be made invalid, were taken up.

The bench comprises Chief Justice Jayasuriya, Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardena and Vijith Malalgoda

Health authorities maintain that in Sri Lanka there is no community transmission of Covid 19.
