People in a quandary over snubbing quarantine laws

24 May, 2020

When baseless allegations are levelled on the daughters of DIG Ajith Rohana and Chief of Staff of the Army Maj. Gen. Sathyapriya Liyanage that they had allegedly absconded the quarantine mandatory for persons arriving in Sri Lanka from foreign countries, some questioned as to how the health authorities turned a blind eye to Election Commission member Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole’s daughter snubbing quarantine laws and visiting the Election Commission on May 19, in a callous manner.

Prof. Hoole’s daughter who had been undergoing the 14 day mandatory quarantine at the Jetwing Blue Hotel in Negombo upon her return home from the United Kingdom had reportedly arrived at the Election Commission along with her father and sibling on May 19 at a time when she should have been undergoing the compulsory quarantine program.

Therefore, her presence at the EC office while purportedly flouting the Quarantine and Prevention of Disease Ordinance had reportedly put the lives of other employees at the EC office in serious danger due to the risk of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Prof. Hoole and his daughter were asked to leave the EC premises on May 19 when the EC staff protested against their presence and they claimed Hoole’s daughter had not undergone quarantine after returning from the UK. Later, the EC premises were disinfected.

Earlier, the daughter of DIG Ajith Rohana issuing a statement categorically rejected media reports that she had returned to the island from Belarus where she had been studying and had been escorted home without being subjected to the mandatory quarantine process.

Posting a video on Facebook, she refuted all such claims and stated the relevant media reports were false. She said that nearly 400 Sri Lankan students are at the university in Belarus where she is carrying out her studies. She said that she hopes to return to Sri Lanka when her final examinations conclude at the end of June.

The daughter of Chief of Staff of the Army Sathyapriya Liyanage has also denied media reports that she had returned to the country from Australia where she had been studying and was escorted home absconding the quarantine at a hotel in Negombo.
