The Water Supply and Facilities State Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara summoned a meeting of the ministry officials recently to study how his departments had functioned during the past years.
The officials related their experiences and proposed measures to improve the water service to meet the public demand doing away with the current shortcomings.
The Minister expressed his concern when he was informed that only 51% of the citizens were provided with clean water. The Minister fixed a similar meeting to review the progress of water supply to the Rathnapura district.
“It is imperative to clean the Kelani and Kalu Ganga and other rivers supplying water”, the Minister said. The water of Kelani and Kalu Ganga rivers is polluted due to the diversion of waste material especially chemicals by factories.
The Minister said that he would give top priority to cleaning rivers to ensure the supply of clean water to the public.
