
A 30-year-old man, a resident of Polonnaruwa New Town has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the murder of a Police Sergeant attached to the President’s Security Division (PSD).
An investigation team of CID Officers made the arrest in Pulasthipura, Anuradhapura where the suspect was in hiding. According to the CID the suspect was identified through CCTV footage and located using mobile phone tracking technology.
The suspect, a known criminal in the area, is said to have been interrupted while committing a robbery, by the victim. He had later escaped on the motorbike used by the sergeant, according to informed sources. The suspect is now being questioned by the CID to locate the motorbike and helmet.
The Police Sergeant attached to the service of Senior DIG S.M WIckramasinghe, head of the President’s Security Division (PSD) was found stabbed on December 17 in a house belonging to a senior officer in Polonnaruwa New Town.
The victim was discovered by a security assistant of the Police when he had visited the house to inquire regarding a motorbike the victim had borrowed from him earlier in the day. The house said to be generally unoccupied while the deceased along with another Police officer would reside in the house during duty visits to the town.
