Discussions between the EPRLF and TMK (Tamil Makkal Koottani), the newly formed political party of former Chief Minister, Northern Province, C.V. Vigneswaran aiming at creating a broader alliance, have neared a positive conclusion, Leader of EPRLF, former Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
The controversial Chief Minister formed his political party, ending the years-long conflict with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). EPRLF which was also a member of the TNA coalition withdrew criticizing the decisions of the TNA leadership.
“Hopefully we would be able to reach an agreement and form a broader alliance which could reflect the Tamil people’s sentiment,” Suresh Premachandran said.
He said, a few other political fronts are also in discussion with the TMK. “We were in discussion with any political front based on the package we introduced as the Tamil People’s Forum, a few months ago. That package is our solution to the decade long Tamil people’s issue. Anyone who accepts that package can join this coalition” Premachandran said.
Asked about the forthcoming Presidential election, the former parliamentarian said the EPRLF-TMK future coalition will reserve discussions with both, the UNP and the SLPP until the time comes.
“We do not forget that we have been cheated since independence. Even this Government cheated us about a new constitution. The Constitutional Council has met more than 80 times and still, they have failed to finalise the draft. Therefore they need to have categorical agreements with us to win our support in the upcoming Presidential election” he said.
