Combatting dengue menace: Mosquito eradication societies set up in schools

School Development Societies have formed ‘Mosquito Eradication Societies’ under the guidance of school principals, at school level, to put an end to the fast spreading dengue fever epidemic among the school community.

These societies consist of senior prefects, senior school teachers, PHIs, school sectional heads, past students and parents, under the guidance of NWP-PC Chief Minister Dharmasiri Dassanayake, about 400 dengue mosquito eradication societies have already been formed at schools of both Kurunegala and Puttalam districts.

The societies will be responsible to hold shramadana campaigns at schools fortnightly to destroy mosquito-breeding grounds within school premises.

Eight-hundred education programs on prevention of mosquito-related diseases too would be held at school level within next two months.

Kurunegala district UNP parliamentarian and Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam is supporting this worthy cause by providing financial assistance to the tune of Rs. two million.

Printed leaflets would be distributed among residents of the NWP by visiting their houses by teams of volunteers to educate the people of the NWP on how to prevent mosquito-related diseases and the role of house-holders in that regard.

30 divisional secretaries in the Kurunegala district too have agreed to assist in this program, W.E. Jayathilake, a Divisional Secretary in the Kurunegala district told the Sunday Observer.
