10,000 runners for Colombo Marathon on October 7

Nearly 10,000 runners are expected to converge in Colombo to participate in the mega event the Colombo Marathon which will be held for the 18th time in Sri Lanka on October 7.

The organisers, Lanka Sportreizen, anticipates runners from different countries to take part in different categories of races which will create an important milestone in the Sri Lankan sports history.

The last edition of the event was concluded gloriously with a gathering of more than 8500 runners, from 47 countries, including more than 350 foreign athletes representing all the continents of the world on October 8, 2017.

The total expenditure for the conduct of this event is approximately Rs. 25 million out of which an amount of Rs.2.5 million is expected to be distributed amongst the various winners.

The event will start at 6.00 am in close proximity to the BMICH Colombo 7. The Route is from Bauddhaloka Mw, proceeding towards the Negombo Beach Park via Borella, Dematogoda, Peliyagoda, Wattala along the Hamilton Canal, Pamunugama, Thalahena, Pitipana and Doowa.

This event is supported by the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Tourism, the Western Provincial Council, Negombo Municipal Council, Athletic Association and the Sri Lanka Police.

Main Objectives of the Event are:

To boost further the image of Sri Lanka as a safe and secure tourist destination where people live in harmony. To promote Sri Lanka as an ideal destination for Recreational Activities. To foster the habit of participation in similar events among school children and the youth of the country. To unearth talent of the Sri Lankans by providing an opportunity to run alongside international runners. To introduce the ‘Fun Running’ culture to the Sri Lankan society and thereby to promote the concept – ‘Healthy Society.’

Going down memory lane some of the events they have authored include the ‘Sri Lanka T-Cup’- Road Cycling Race, ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ – Mountain Biking Challenge, ‘Vittel Amazon’ Adventure Challenge, ‘WQS Surfing with the Australian Surfing Professionals’, ‘Sri Lankan Golf Classic’ etc… in addition to the LSR Colombo Marathon.
