ICC tells Sri Lanka to conduct democratic election

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday told Sri Lanka to put aside its internal squabbles and conduct a democratic election of office-bearers before February 9, 2019 when sports minister Faiser Mushtapha met the sport’s global head Shashank Manohar and CEO David Richardson.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva accompanied Minister Mushtapha. Sri Lanka Cricket is currently under a so-called Competent Authority. The ICC had also told the Sri Lankan delegation to lay the groundwork and appoint the necessary committees to pave the way for the election of office-bearers which was postponed on a court ruling in May this year.

Thilanga Sumathipala the incumbent president of Sri Lanka Cricket was poised to win the election for a second two-year term.

Later a legal ruling was made that the election can take place.Ashley de Silva is the only cricket personality left in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket.
