The Police will introduce a new one way traffic plan in Nugegoda and Dehiwela during the coming weeks. According to DIG Traffic, Palitha Fernando the new one way traffic plan will seek to reduce the traffic congestion faced by motorists during the rush hours.
“The road will be made one way during specific hours to regulate the flow of traffic in and out of the city during rush hours,” he said adding that this new system will be tested on four consecutive days to observe the outcome.
According to DIG Fernando, the pilot traffic plan is set to be implemented on the 25, 26, 27 and 28 of this month on a trial basis. Accordingly the fly-overs situated at the Nugegoda and Dehiwala junctions will be made one way towards Colombo city during morning hours while in the evening only vehicles leaving Colombo city will be allowed to make use of the flyovers. “During rush hours the traffic remains stagnant in these areas stretching for miles,” Fernando said adding that, therefore, this plan will seek to ease the severe congestion in the areas. DIG Fernando said the public will be informed prior to the implementation of the program.
According to the Traffic Police the current road infrastructure in place is unable to cope with the number of vehicles and road users in Colombo as according to Police statistics over 600,000 vehicles and two million people enter the city of Colombo daily.
