With a view to unearthing young players to enter the field of football, Renown SC will launch its second Football Academy on June 1 at the Colombo Race Course ground beginning at 3.00 p.m. For the past two years Renown has been conducting the Academy for young players in Kotahena with the aim of strengthening the club’s soccer pool.
According to the organizers, the new Academy is to register young aspiring players between the ages of 6 and 16 with an entry fee to learn the basics of the sport and are confident that this model will help improve the standard of football in Sri Lanka with a technically sound generation of footballers. Tactics and physical and psychological aspects will also be taught to the young hopefuls.
At the beginning the Renown Academy headed by Robert Peiris will have the services of qualified coaches and former national players to guide the players. They also hope to bring in foreign coaches to help the youngsters in a big way in the near future.
When asked from an official about the present day academies in Sri Lanka, he claimed that though there are many sprouting around the country from grass root level none of them have reached the required standard to improve football due to the absence of well trained coaches to guide the youngsters.
“On registering with Renown Academy on a reasonable fee, the entrants will get all benefits needed to be good soccerites for the future. We also hope to offer scholarships to entrants with special talents and skills. In the future the Academy hopes to conduct football festivals at junior level to gain more experience on the field while providing them with opportunities to prepare them for international matches”, an official said.
Training sessions of the Renown Football Academy will be held on Friday evening at the Race Course ground and on Saturday or Sunday evening at the Sports Ministry ground Torrington with seven sessions every month.
Organisers have requested interested players and hopefuls to call 0777-747847 for more information that they may need to know.
