Kandy incidents : Ten suspects further remanded

The main suspect in the Kandy incidents and the leader of the Mahason Balakaya, Amith Weerasinghe and nine others were further remanded till March 29 by the Courts yesterday.

According to Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, eight suspects including Weerasinghe were presented before the Magistrate’s Court, while two suspects including his close associate Nasnarampattige Sumedha Suraweera was presented before the Galagedara Magistrate’s Court.

The 10 people were arrested on March 8 under suspicion of inciting racial hate and violence in relation to the recent communal unrest in the Kandy district and were held under detention orders for questioning by the Police Terrorist Investigation Unit (TID).

According to the Police, the suspects including one Monk are residents of Yakkala, Dambulla, Chilaw, Bangadeniya, Balangoda and Kandy. Police who recently raided an office belonging to the Mahason Balakaya in Kundasale, discovered a range of publications featuring hate speech, banners, cash receipts, hate inciting wristbands and six petrol bombs.
