Sri Lankans will be having a bumper sports extravaganza over the next two and a half months starting with the Rugby World Cup which kicked off in France on Friday followed by the Cricket World Cup that starts on October 5 in India.
Both World Cups could be witnessed live in the island as MTV Media networks have bagged the rights to telecast the matches.
Most of the matches in the Rugby World Cup are scheduled to start at 12.30 am Sri Lanka time and some of the matches could overlap once the Cricket World Cup starts.
Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva said they were most grateful that Sri Lankans will be able to see the World Cup cricket matches on MTV Media Networks while its Group Director Shevon Daniel assured that both the Rugby World Cup and the Cricket World Cup matches will have an uninterupted telecast despite both events occuring at the same time at some stage.
According to analysts there are no front-runners at the Rugby World Cup although some experts label Six Nations champions Ireland, defending champs South Africa and host nation France as hot contenders while New Zealand cannot be left out of the equation.
