Madushan: ‘I want to be the best version of myself’

Ishara Madushan played school rugby as a wing three-quarter for his alma mater Wesley College in the inter school championship.

Then he went on to represent the Sri Lanka Seven team and at present he is turning out for the Air Force in the inter club tournament in his pet position.

“Yes I am happy but I strive to achieve more goals in the future and I will keep working hard to achieve them” said Madushan in an interview with the Sunday Observer.

Excerpts of the interview:

Q: What made you enter the world of sports?

I was known to be a hyperactive child and due to that I’ve always been involved in running and doing many different sports activities since I was a child. It was the reason I’ve got involved in sports since I was a child

Q: Who has supported you the most?

There are many people who have supported me to be the person I am today, mostly the ones I love the most, which would be my family and my Faith has supported me the most along with all my coaches. I’m always grateful to all of them

Q: What made you choose rugby?

Rugby is a type of sport that builds the character of an individual in terms of discipline, stature, mindset and integrity and likewise it is the reason why I chose rugby

Q: Surely it is not easy to be a rugby player?

Of course it is not easy

Q: What do you do when you have free time?

I love to watch movies, rugby related videos on YouTube, go out and chill out with some of my friends as well as listen to songs, that’s how I spend my free time

Q: What’s your most unforgettable incident to date?

One of the most unforgettable incidents was when my college Wesley became the 2013 Milo Trophy knockout champions beating Trinity College Kandy in the final. Hence that incident will always be in my memory right throughout my whole life as one of the most unforgettable incidents to date

Q: What would you say are the priorities in your life?

My priorities are my family and rugby. I like to take care of my family and ensure that they live comfortably

Q: Who is your favourite singer and what’s your favourite song?

My favourite singers are Bathiya and Santhush and my favourite song is Kavikariye by the duo

Q: What is the best compliment you have received?

The best compliment that I got was when as a schoolboy, another boy from my school told me that one day he wanted to be a rugby player like me.

That is something I will never forget

Q: In life how do you like to describe yourself?

In life I always do something that I love the most and that is rugby and it is something I’ve had a huge passion for since I was a kid. Hence I like to describe myself as a humble person who is having fun in life

Q: Who is your favourite rugby player?

My favourite rugby player is Dan Norton from the England Sevens team

Q: Who do you sometimes compare yourself to?

To be honest I do not compare myself to anyone because I understand that no one is perfect. What I do is, I look to be the best version of myself and improve day by day

Q: Thus far what’s your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was being selected for the Sri Lanka team at the upcoming Asian Sevens in the UAE

Q: Moving away from rugby, what’s your favourite movie and who’s your favourite actor?

My favourite movie is the Harry Potter series and the favourite actor is Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

Q: Are you happy with all your achievements?

Yes I am happy but I strive to achieve more goals in the future.
