Sri Lankan hanged in Kuwait for drug trafficking

30 July, 2023

A Sri Lankan man was hanged in a Kuwaiti jail after he was convicted for narcotic trafficking earlier this week.

The man who was not identified was hanged after his appeals to the highest court were turned down, they said.

He was hanged along with four other foreigners convicted of various serious criminal charges that included murder.

Capital punishment for drugs is rare in this oil rich desert kingdom unlike in other countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Iran.

“This appears to be a deterrent to others since Kuwait has seen an upsurge in the wide spread use and circulation of hard narcotics in that country”, Senarath Yapa Deputy General Manager of Training at the Sri Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLFBE) said. -LB
