Thailand mulls gifting veterinary hospital to Sri Lanka

23 July, 2023

The Government of Thailand is exploring the possibility of setting up a fully-equipped veterinary hospital in Sri Lanka to treat sick tamed and wild elephants and tuskers as Sri Lanka doesn’t have such medical facilities.

The Government of Thailand would provide X’ray, scan machines and other medical facilities including veterinary experts to the proposed hospital. Following a request by the former Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Neranjan Wijayaratne, the Ambassador of Thailand Poj Harnpol has expressed his willingness to help Sri Lanka in this regard. Wijayaratne stressed the importance of having a well-equipped hospital for elephants in Sri Lanka to safeguard them as elephants now face extinction.

A team of representatives from Thailand is due to visit Sri Lanka in the near future to discuss this matter further with the Government authorities, Thailand’s Ambassador Harnpol told Wijayaratne.
