Senior Lawyer Prematilaka passes away

Former President of the Colombo Bar Association and Sri Lanka Bar Association’s former Regional Vice President, Senior Lawyer Gamini Prematilaka passed away on Thursday July 20. Born in Beralapanathara, Deniyaya, he was 88 at the time of his death. A past pupil of Ananda Vidyalaya, Colombo, and Aquinas College Colombo, he was a well-known poet and writer during the 1970s and 1980s.

Prematilaka’s wife was Justice Mallika Prematilaka, Sri Lanka’s first female judge. Their only child Chamini too is a lawyer. The funeral was held at the General Cemetery, Borella yesterday, July 22. The remains were at 92, Thalapathpitiya Road, Udahamulla, Nugegoda, for the public to pay their last respects.

Sri Lanka Easter Sunday Massacre by Dr Rohan Gunaratne

‘Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday Massacre’, Lessons for the International community, written by Dr. Rohan Gunaratne will be launched on Friday July 28, at 4.00 pm at the BCIS Auditorium, BMICH.

A lecture will also delivered by Dr. Rohan Gunaratne and to coincide with the book launch, a video of Zaharan never before seen, will be screened.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena will be the chief guest while Ali Sabry PC, minister of Foreign Affairs will be as the guest of honour.

This event is jointly organised by Sarasavi Bookshop (Pvt) Ltd with Penguin Random House.

On high alert

The authorities are on high alert for a possible narco-gun trade in the seas surrounding the country. Most of these weapons are believed to have fallen into the hands of organised crime gangs and narcotic traders, a senior official of the Ministry of Defence told the Sunday observer.
