Beach volleyball selections on July 17-18
National beach volleyball player selections for men and women are scheduled to be conducted at the Negombo Beach Park on July 17 and 18.
Selections for men are to be done on July 17 while the trials for women will be held on July 18 from 8.00 am onwards on both days. All players interested have been requested to be present on these days on schedule.
Players selected to these pools will undergo further training under qualified coaches according to officials. (BP)
Sri Lanka wins 4X400 silver
Sri Lanka’s mixed relay team won a Silver medal at the Asian Athletic Championship in Bangkok yesterday.
They also established a new Sri Lanka record finishing the 4x400 metre race in 3:15.41 seconds.
The team comprised Aruna Dharshana, Tharushi Karunarathna, Kalinga Kumarage and Nadeesha Ramanayake.
Royal rout Rajans
Royal College came back hard in the second to defeat Dharmaraja College by 36 points to 18 in their Dialog trophy school rugby encounter played at the Royal Complex yesterday. The scores were 12-12 at half time.
Royal scored six tries out of which three were converted while the Rajans scored through six penalties.
Nakeeb Mohamed scored three tries while Nabeel Yahiya scored two tries for Royal.
Entries called for Mercantile swimming
The Mercantile Swimming Championship 2023 and the President’s Trophy organized by the Thurstan College Old Boys Aquatic Club will be held on October 15, 2023 at the Thurstan College Swimming Pool Complex.
The event which is conducted under the strict guidance of SLASU has been a platform for swimmers in the mercantile sector to showcase their talent which they did during the past 14 years.

Malay CC triumph in first hockey outing
The revamped hockey team of Colombo Malay Cricket Club (CMCC) had a good opening match and beat Old Benedictine SC 2-1 in the CHA conducted League Hockey Tournament encounter played at Dharmapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya yesterday.
D. Gajamugam scored the first goal in the fifth minute when he took a well director hit to beat the Old Bens goalie on his far right to sound the board.
Soon after that the match became more intense with both teams playing hard to infiltrate and missed many opportunities.
Colombo Malay CC were deprived of many scoring chances due to the ground conditions with centre forward Dinush Tharaka who had a power packed high ball that rebounded off the goal post.
CMCC took a 1-nil lead at half time. After the turn around, it was once again Gajamugan who crossed the line, scoring his second goal to give CMCC a 2-0 lead.
In the dying moments Old Bens player Thisal Alahakoon found the target and with it the long whistle was blown. (TBR)
