No ceremonies for President’s first anniversary in office

16 July, 2023

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed officials to refrain from organising any ceremony or event to commemorate his first anniversary as President. This directive was issued in response to various requests by different parties regarding the organisation of such ceremonies.

Approaching the one-year mark since assuming the Presidency on July 20, 2022, Wickremesinghe was elected as the eighth Executive President by obtaining 134 votes in Parliament. Subsequently, on July 21 he was officially sworn in during a ceremony in Parliament.

President Wickremesinghe took on the country’s leadership amid a challenging period marked by fuel and gas queues. However, his proactive efforts have successfully transformed and stabilised the situation, bringing about significant improvements.
