President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to set up a Leadership Board (High Posts Committee) for the United National Party (UNP) to produce future leaders.
President Wickremesinghe told a gathering of party seniors last week that he took this decision to produce second-tier leaders as he is not able to spend much time on party affairs due to the many duties of the Presidency.
The President told party seniors that the decision to appoint this Leadership Board will be taken so that there will be no unnecessary problems regarding the future leadership of the UNP. The President said that by appointing a Leadership Board with equal powers, real leaders can come forward and those who cannot serve as leaders will have to retreat.
A resolution in this connection will be adopted at the Party Convention due to be held by mid August this year.
