
The recent media expose on the dilapidated state of the Kataragama Main Bus stand, which is a vital transportation hub for pilgrimages had drawn in results.
Transport and Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana initiated the renewal of the bus stand with additional facilities for passengers, and it was opened to the public on June 25 with the participation of the Minister.
The bus stand had been in a state of disrepair, with decaying roofs, while also serving as a well-known gathering spot for beggars for more than nine years.
Following the exposure done by the provincial journalist; K.D. Dewapriya, Dishan Gunasekara; the chief custodian of the Kataragama Dewalaya and Minister Gunawardhana; inspected the unsanitary building and took action to renew it.
During the inspection, it was revealed that officers of the transport development authority of the Uva Province lacked the financial resources to renew the bus stand.
Later, Dishan Gunasekara took measures to assist the pilgrims by utilising Rs. 2 million from the treasury of the Kataragama Dewalaya.
This amount had been accumulated through donations provided by pilgrims.
A special award was presented to Dewapriya in recognition of his outstanding contribution to media services aimed at enhancing the welfare of society.
This event was attended by Ven. Kobhwaka Dhamminda Thera, the chief bhikkhu of Kiriwehere, and Ven. Kapugama Shashrapathi, the chief bhikkhu at the Abhinawarama Temple.
State Agricultural Minister, Shahsindra Rajapaksha, Parliament Member Vijitha Berugoda, and the residents of Kataragama participated.
