Govt ready to face IMF for second tranche - Semasinghe

13 July, 2023

Finance State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said that the first review of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be held in September and the government has prepared the necessary background to successfully face it.

He said this addressing the Kandy district session of the programme being held on district level by the State Revenue Unit of the Presidential Secretariat regarding the introduction of the government’s new tax policy and programme related to the International Monetary Fund with the aim of building the country together on Tuesday (11).

He said that if the goals of the review, including domestic debt optimisation and foreign debt restructuring, are not passed, there is no possibility of getting the second installment and the government has already met the relevant goals.

Semasinghe also said that the government received confirmation from the International Monetary Fund for re-establishing the collapsed economy and working to achieve economic revival. The minister also emphasised that the existence of certain political parties is determined by the extent to which this economic crisis will last, so they are working for it.

He also said that although the country’s economic collapse is not a matter of pride, Sri Lanka is being taken as an example by every country today in rebuilding the collapsed economy. The State Minister said some people are trying to create some mistrust regarding getting the second loan installment to the country, but the government has no doubt about it. Kandy District Secretary Chandana Thennakoon, government officials, businessmen and social activists also participated in this event.
