An extraordinary gazette notice has been issued ordering the conduct of a population and housing census in relation to the years 2023-2024.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued this gazette announcement as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies. This special gazette dated 10th July 2023 has been issued under the Census Ordinance.
The 15th Population and Housing Census of the country was scheduled to be held in the year 2021. However, the government had to postpone it due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first population and housing census in Sri Lanka was conducted in 1871 and the last population and housing census was conducted in 2012.
