Dengue cases spike in Colombo

9 July, 2023

Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said that there is an alarming increase in the number of dengue cases reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area.

Dr. Wijayamuni said that the situation will worsen within the next two weeks with the onset of monsoon rains.

He said that 2,138 suspected dengue cases had been reported in Colombo this year and the highest number of cases has been reported from the Cinnamon Gardens area.

There are many newly constructed buildings especially in the city of Colombo, where dengue mosquito breeding places are in abundance.

Dr. Wijayamuni said the spread of dengue in Colombo is largely under control, but the next two weeks are critical as monsoon rains activate.

Some 36,628 dengue cases had been recorded in the country by May 24 this year with eight districts (Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Kalutara, Kegalle and Galle) reporting more dengue cases. The new cases in May alone have reached almost 6,000, he added.
