A group of experts from NASA, led by Prof. Sunithi Karunathilake, a senior scientist of Sri Lankan origin, yesterday arrived at Ussangoda hill in Ambalantota to investigate potential similarities between certain rock formations discovered in Sri Lanka and those found on Mars.
This team observed the rock layer bordering the Indian Ocean on the south slope of the Ussangoda hill and took samples from it. It is also special that this light green coloured rock layer is located in several parts and can be easily seen at the Ussangoda area too.
Geological Scientist Prof.Sunithi Karunathilaka said that rocks similar to Mars are located in the part of Ussangoda mountain bordered by the sea.
