Opposition MPs who are mum on debt restructuring should resign – Wajira Abeywardena

2 July, 2023

United National Party (UNP) chairman, MP Wajira Abeywardena said that members of the Opposition who do not express their opinion on debt restructuring should resign from Parliament.

He said that MPs representing the Opposition should make a statement on behalf of 57 million deposits, and added that if they resign, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Sagara Kariyawasam will have the opportunity to appoint new ones.

MP Abeywardena who questioned whether the Opposition wants to impose more taxes on depositors said that if they say so directly, the President will submit the matter to the Cabinet.

He said the interest rate for EPF and ETF funds was set at nine percent during the tenure of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and added that it is a dilemma for Cabinet Ministers in that Government such as Prof. G.L. Peiris and Dullas Allahaperuma also say that this is wrong.

The MP also said that the financial power given to Parliament by the Constitution should not be used for political gain and if this is done, the whole country will be in jeopardy.
