University admissions to be expedited this year - State Minister

State Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Suren Raghavan said students who sat for the GCE (AL) Examination this year would be facilitated to enter state universities by September this year. Only those who scored high marks at the examination would be selected.

He sa id the answer scripts of the students are now being evaluated by the Examinations Department.

Since the evaluation of the answer scripts was delayed for a long time due to unavoidable circumstances, steps would be expedited to admit students to universities this year.

State Minister Raghavan said the Higher Education Ministry has decided to regulate all private tuition classes that are conducted for students who are to sit the GCE (AL) Examination and the tuition fees and the facts that are taught to students at these classes would be considered seriously in the proposed regulating process by the Higher Education Ministry.

He said acts of indiscipline of senior students and the addiction to drugs, liquor and narcotics are reported to be on the rise among students who attend private tuition classes countrywide. Therefore, the regulation of tuition classes has become an urgent necessity to put the students on the correct path in life, he added.
