24 June, 2023

Former President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday reiterated that there was no investigation regarding death of former Governor Reginald Cooray. “It was not a death but a murder,” he said.

Former Minister and Governor Reginald Cooray did not die, he sacrificed his life for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,”former President Maithripala Sirisena said.

The former President said this while participating in the vote of condolence on the demise of former MPs Larine Perera, Reginald Cooray, Buddhika Kurukularatne and Muttu Sivalingam.

He said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party expresses its deepest condolences to all the members who have passed away.

“I have been closely associated with all these four people. I have served in Parliament for 35 consecutive years. Therefore, I have a good understanding of them. I must talk about former Minister Reginald in particular. He was sick and recovered. He called me before going to the nomination discussion. I said not to go. But he went to that discussion. He was very restless with the pressure created there.Representatives of some parties had spoken to him very badly. I must say that he was under pressure and couldn’t bear it. That is why this kind of situation happened to him. After the discussion, he called me and said most of the people spoke badly to him there. He said he was hurt. When I notice the behaviour and actions of the current political representatives, Reginald is a learned and humble person,”.
