In anticipation of the historic Esela Festival at Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya decision had been made to prohibit sale of liquor in the area.
The Department of Excise has made a firm commitment to maintain a "no booze zone" in the area for a duration of 16 days, starting today. Consequently, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be strictly prohibited in all hotels, restaurants, bars, taverns, and wine stores within the Kataragama Divisional Secretariat area during the specified period. All liquor shops are to be closed during this period.
The public is encouraged to call the Department's hotline at 1913 if they have any complaints or information on any alcohol, narcotic drug, or tobacco-related offenses.
