The motion to remove the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka Chairman (PUCSL) Janaka Ratnayake from its membership was passed by 46 majority votes in Parliament yesterday (24).
123 votes were received in favour of the resolution and only 77 votes were received against. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna voted in favour of the proposal with Independent member Kurunegala District MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa. SJB MPs Kalutara District MP Kumara Welgama, Colombo District MP A.H.M. Fowzie, Badulla District MP Vadivel Suresh voted together with the government.
In Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Tamil National Alliance, National Jana Balawegaya, Free Janatha Sabha, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, MP Ali Sabry Raheem voted against the resolution. The Tamil National Alliance abstained from voting.

Minister Ali Sabry, Suren Raghavan were out of the country and Independent MPs Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Nimal Piyatissa, H.M.M.Haris, Priyankara Jayaratne, Prof.Channa Jayasumana, Prof.Tissa Vitharana, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MPs Rajitha Senaratne, M.S Thowfeek, Hesha Vithanage and all the MPs of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi, Akila Ilankai Congress and the Thamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani were absent for the vote.
At the time of voting, 24 MPs were not present in the Chamber. At 4.55 am, after ringing the calling bell, the voting began at 5 pm with Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena presiding.
The proposal was presented by Leader of the House, Minister Susil Premajayantha, this morning, pursuant to Section 07 of the PUCSL Act and the debate was opened by Electricity and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera.
