Security around three Universities is to be stepped up to ensure increased security to the students on the instructions of Public Security Minister Tiran Alles.

The directive to increase the security was issued to the Inspector General C.D.Wickremaratne following discussions with the authorities of the three universities on three consecutive days.

Accordingly, security will be stepped up at the Colombo, Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardhanapura Universities.

The first of the meetings was held with the Vice Chancellor of the Colombo University Prof. H.D. Karunaratne and other senior staff members at the Ministry of Public Security earlier this week.

The Ministry of Public Security in a press release said that the Vice Chancellor had requested security around the women’s hostel. Accordingly a directive was given to increase security at night time around the hostels.

The release said that the VC had complained that the number of robberies too were on the rise. The Minister ordered the Police to take appropriate action.

On May 17 the Minister met with the Sri Jayawardhanapura Vice Chancellor Prof.Upul Subasinghe and staff. The release said that a request was made by the VC to increase security around the women’s hostel and accordingly a directive was issued to the Police to increase patrols around the university. A similar discussion was held with the Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Prof.Nilanthi de Silva and attention was drawn about the security situation and the issue of narcotics within the campus.

The release said that the VC had requested for additional security around the women’s hostel.

The Minister had given a similar directive to increase security.
