Plans are afoot to setup a “Social Intelligence Unit especially to safeguard children and the young, revealed State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon citing the recent unlawful incidents those reported about the fate of several unfortunate teenage children.
“The notion of forming a “Social Intelligence Unit” is still under scrutiny and discussions at the primary level and this will be broached with the support of island-wide schools as a safety measure to protect our future generation” he pledged.
State Minister Tennakoon was speaking during a visit to the Police Cadet Division at the Sri Lanka Police College in Kalutara, on Thursday.
While addressing the School Cadet Instructors at the Police Cadet Division, he emphasised on the well-timed need of bringing reforms to the National Cadet Corps (NCC), as well as including the necessity of expanding its wings to the Northern and Eastern Provinces to allow access to rural youth there.
“Since the island is undergoing a transitional period, a far-reaching replacement to this out-dated model is vital”, he explained while citing expensive state-run but unproductive services which lead to crippling the entire system.
Lacking personality, practicability, knowledge and leadership are the most common issues that are noticeable among the young graduates, he reiterated while stressing the timely need for reforms in all sectors.
The State Minister who visited the Police Training Division at the invitation of Director, Police Cadet Division Senior Superintendent Chinthaka Gunaratne, was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour in keeping with the long held traditions of the college on his arrival at the venue.
During the visit he was accompanied to the administration complex and also to the new auditorium where he addressed a large gathering of School Cadet Instructors.
The event saw a tree planting at the venue by the State Minister and presenting of a memento to the guest as a symbolic gesture and to mark the occasion.
While commending the Sri Lanka Police College and its staffers for their service rendered to the nation since its inception, State Minister Tennakoon requested all Police ranks to work collectively to set up a bright future for the future generations.
