
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the Ministry of Health to investigate and provide an urgent report regarding the case of partial eye sight loss in 10 people after eye surgery at the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital.
The President has asked the Ministry of Health for information about the medicines applied to the eyes of the patients after the relevant eye surgery, as well as the complications that occurred after that and the measures taken to ensure the health and safety of the patients concerned.
The President has also asked the Ministry of Health to immediately inform about the measures taken by the Ministry of Health to prevent such serious health complications from happening again.
Dr. Mahendra Seneviratne, the director of Nuwara Eliya General Hospital, told the media that the preliminary tests had revealed that there were complications in the patients due to the presence of germs in a medicine brought from a foreign country.
The Director of the Nuwara Eliya Hospital said in a statement to the media that the patients who went home after treatment were admitted to the hospital again saying that they had completely lost their eyesight.
The Director of the Nuwara Eliya Hospital had said that their condition is gradually improving after further treatment.
