It is reported that the appointment of members to three independent commissions, including the Election Commission, is being delayed due to the lack of consensus among the members of the Parliamentary Constitutional Council.
The other Commissions that have been unable to appoint members are the Human Rights Commission and the Police Commission. The independent commissions were dissolved when a new Constitutional Council was appointed in accordance with the 21st Amendment and new members need to be appointed to these bodies.
Appointing new members to the Commission comes under the purview of the Constitutional Council and it includes the President’s, Prime Minister’s, Opposition’s and Civil Society representatives. Parliamentary sources said that the delay to appoint new commission members is due to the ‘tug-of-war’ among a few members of the Constitutional Council. Independent commissions were set up under the 21st Amendment for these institutions to function transparently.
