The Court of Appeal issued four interim restraining orders yesterday (24), preventing former Attorney General Dappula De Livera from being arrested or questioned or from obtaining a statement from him related to a comment he made to the media regarding the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

These interim restraining orders were issued by the Court of Appeal after considering a Writ Petition filed against him being requested to come to the Criminal Investigation Department regarding a statement he made while serving as the Attorney General. These interim orders will remain in force until the hearing of the petition is over.

The petitioner who served as the Attorney General retired from that position in the year 2021. He had been asked to come to the Criminal Investigation Department on April 19 to obtain a statement related to a comment he made on the Easter Sunday attacks while he was the Attorney General.

The CID had relayed the relevant message on April 18. He mentioned that the CID requesting him to come to get a statement about an incident that happened two years ago without giving even a twenty-four hour prior notice was an illegal and arbitrary action Also, he said as the Attorney General, he has the immunity to not disclose the information he receives and he also has the same immunity as a lawyer.
