The 30th death anniversary of former Trade, State Defence and Education Minister Lalith Athulathmudali falls today, April 23.
He was assassinated by LTTE terrorists in 1993.
He was 57 at the time of his demise. Athulathmudali founded the Mahapola Scholarship scheme which provides welfare for thousands of students pursuing higher education.
Athulathmudali entered politics as the organiser of the Ratmalana constituency on June 1, 1976 and won the Ratmalana electorate at the 1977 general election, taking oaths as a Member of the National State Assembly. Several commemorative events have been organised this year to honour the late statesman.
