LG Polls will be further postponed from April 25 - EC

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake issuing a media release said the Elections Commission

is compelled to postpone the 2023 Local Government polls, scheduled to be held on April 25.

The Commissioner General said the decision to postpone the Local Government Election for the second time, was reached due to reasons beyond the control of the Elections Commission and the inadequacy of funds to meet the requirements of the election process.

The next Local Government election date will be decided according to the decision given by the court according to the proceedings before the Supreme Court. The Election Commission has the ability to decide the date of the next election based on the receiving of financial allocations required to hold the election. The District Retraining Officers will decide the date of the Local Government polls on the first of these two days after consulting the Elections Commission.

However, the announcement states that the Election Commission will continue to implement all the continuous measures taken for the prompt conduct of Local Government polls.
