Dambulla DEC receives glut of potatoes from Jaffna Peninsula

The Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre (DEC) is receiving a large harvest of potatoes from the Jaffna Peninsula these days.

Businessmen pointed out that the economic centre has received more than 50,000 kilos of potato grown by Jaffna farmers yesterday morning.

The wholesale price of a kilo of local potatoes was sold at a price between Rs.170 and Rs.200 for the past few weeks. However, a kilo of Jaffna potatoes was sold at a price of between Rs.120 and Rs. 140 yesterday.

Potatoes are mostly imported to the country these days from Pakistan and Bangladesh and foreign potatoes sold at a wholesale price of Rs. 90 to Rs. 95 per kilo are sold at a price of Rs 120 to Rs.130 yesterday.

Businessmen said that the Dambulla Economic Centre is receiving a variety of vegetables including carrots, red onions which are in great demand.
