Veteran lyricist Sunil Sarath Perera turns 80

Sunil Sarath Perera who has rendered a yeoman service to the Sri Lankan music industry and literature will celebrate his 80th birthday today (March 5).

Born on March 5, 1943 at Kirulapone, Sunil Sarath Perea is the lyricist who has written the highest number of songs for veteran singer Visharada W.D. Amaradeva. He was as the Director General of Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) from 1994 to 1995. He was instrumental in starting the Saraswathi Mandapaya of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in the early 60’s.

He has written nearly 1,000 songs for almost all Sinhala singers and received many State literary awards. He also won the Presidential Award for environmental communication. He has authored 20 literature books. The “Alakamandawa” program produced to mark his 80th birthday will be telecast via National Television today at 3.00pm.
