Today, anyone facing challenges with their mental health can reach out to the NIMH by dialling or texting the 1926 service, with a WhatsApp line also recently launched, that can be reached via 075 555 1926. The text and Whatsapp services are available 24/7 in all three languages.

Airtel CEO/MD Ashish Chandra said, “Airtel’s objectives locally and globally are centered on leveraging technology to connect youth to opportunities. At a time when 1 in 12 Sri Lankans is estimated to face some kind of challenge with their mental health, providing every Sri Lankan with convenient and reliable access to professional help with anonymity guaranteedis essential for youth to reach their true potential.

“It is also important that each of us makes an effort to speak more openly about mental health and encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for the help they deserve.

In this manner, we can ensure that no Sri Lankan is left behind,” he said. Since launching two years ago on World Mental Health Day 2020, the text-based 1926 service alone has helped to initiate over 1000 life-saving interventions, and also providing support, comfort, and guidance to many individuals facing challenges with their mental health.

While available to all Sri Lankans, Airtel users will have free access to professional services via SMS and calls. The NIMH mental health chat-service initiative is also aligned with Airtel’s overarching global mission to connect and empower youth across the world.
