Removal of some street food stalls in Kimbulawala area not my decision - Minister

22 February, 2023

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday (21) that the possible removal of some street food stalls in the Kimbulawala area is not done on a personal agenda but in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.

Minister Dr. Gunawardena said that it has been identified that there are more than 3,000 similar places and measures have to be taken to prevent vehicle accidents in these areas and make these places more accessible to the people.

The minister also said that a Cabinet paper was recently submitted on the action to be taken on similar places that operate without any permission in accordance with the traffic law.

Dr.Bandula Gunawardena stated this while replying to a question raised by MP Harsha De Silva yesterday (21).

“This is done by removing stalls that are being operated without any permission in accordance with the traffic law."

"We are doing this not only in this place but in the entire Sri Lankan road system in accordance with the directives of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.

Earlier, several complaints have been made to the Urban Development Authority due to the blocking of parking space and passenger space in that area,” the minister said.
