French duos conquer Negombo military beach volleyball

Spikers from France dominated the action-packed World Military Beach Volleyball Championship by taking the men’s and women’s crowns at the Negombo beach on Friday (17) morning.

The Frenchmen claimed gold defeating the German duo in the men’s category as Olivier Barthelemy and Samuel Cattet defeated the German duo of Lukas Pfretzschner and Robin Sowa in a thrilling final that went up to three sets. They took the first set on 21-19, but lost the second 17-21 and came back to win the decider 15-10.

The French pair of Aline Chamereau and Clemence Vieira took the gold medal in the women’s category when they defeated the duo from Sri Lanka Deepika Bandara and Kushani Tharuka in straight sets, 21-9, 21-14 in the final.

Sri Lanka’s Team 2 pair of Prasadini and Thushari took the bronze medal in the women’s category.

A total of 90 games were played over a span of five days, with a number of fans gathering at Negombo Beach on the final day to witness the thrilling action.

The grand finals and the awards ceremony was graced by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Udeni Rajapakse as the chief guest. (TBR)
