
It is certain to happen and nothing appears to stand in their way. Unbeaten League champions Kandy Sports Club have got their hands firmly on the title as they continued their winning ways when they thrashed Havelock Sports Club 35-15 in their Nippon Paint inter club rugby encounter last weekend.
The answer to the million-dollar question that the rugby-loving public in Sri Lanka now want to know is whether Kandy SC is having fun on the field as they have already won the league rugby championship for eight years in a row (2015–2022) and the other seven rugby clubs have failed miserably to even challenge them, making them (rivals) mediocre.
There is a joke going around among the clubs at evening sessions that Kandy SC and rugby fans must be too bored that the League has been a one-horse race for nearly 10 years.
It was a pathetic display by Havies again last week as nothing went right for last season’s runners-up as Kandy SC played with purpose and pride in wearing their club jersey.
For Kandy SC winger Dinal Ekanayake, Number Eight Wajid Fawmy, flanker Tharindu Chathuranga and skipper cum hooker Damith Dissanayake scored a try each for Kandy with Tharinda Ratwatte on target with three conversions and two penalties.
Winger Ramesh Fernando scored the solitary try for the losing Havies while fly half Sandesh Jayawickrema was on target with one penalty.
Police SC snatch a thriller
After the scores were deadlocked at 7-7 at the half time break, Police SC managed to pull off a thrilling 15-14 win over the fighting Army SC outfit at Police Park last week.
For the winners Police, number eight Heshan Thilakarathna and full back Prince Chamara scored the two tries while Chamara put over the conversion and the match winning drop-goal to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Ijaz Ahmed and Manoj Kumara scored the tries and Chamath Fernando put over the two conversions for the losing Army SC team.
Tries galore at Air Force-CH
After holding on to a slender lead of 18-17, Air Force SC came storming in to post a 44 points to 31 win against the young CH and FC team at the Race Course ground last week.
For Police tries were scored by Krishan Soorya, Denuwan Lakranda, Dharshana Tharindu Dabare, Parakrama Ratnayake, Shashika Fernando while fly half Nuwan Fernado put over three penalties and all five conversions.
Skipper and hooker Prasath Madusanka,Vishwa Kiriella, Udara, Avishka Lee and Teran Thiranagama scored a try each with Hirusha Sampath converting three tries for the losing CH outfit.
CR continue winning spree
The high riding Red Shirts from CR and FC scored a thumping 37 points to 17 win over Navy SC at the Race Course ground last week.
For the CR outfit Chemod Muthunayake (two tries) Lahiru Pavithra, Lasindu Karunathilake, Thenuka Nanayakkara and Ruchira Ekanayake scored the tries with Chathura Seneviratne putting over two conversions while slotting in the solitary penalty.
For the losing Navy SC team Nirosh Perera, Adeesha Weerathunga and Samith Dananjaya scored the tries while Thilina Weerasinghe slotted in one conversion.
